EMRAP Aussie Edition – Free Episode – Vera Sistenich Part 2

This is the second half of my EMRAP interview with the venerable Dr Vera Sistenich (@ThinkSyncs). (You can listen to Part 1 here) This interview is worth it’s weight in gold for anyone who is either currently working with asylum seekers or refugees, those who are considering this line of work and anyone who has the slightest interest in the physical and emotional wellbeing of people in this population.

In this episode Vera again provides a fountain of pearls for anyone working in this setting including:

  • Tips for dealing with the mental health of people in detention
  • Child & adolescent health issues in the refugee/asylum seeker population
  • Self awareness of what it means to be a doctor in the greater asylum seeker bureaucratic and political machinery
  • The concept of dual loyalty
  • How to handle your emotional and political reactions to witnessing or working in this scene and the potential fallout or consequences that could arise from any public reaction you may have.
  • Tips for handling your own personal mental health in relation to working in this scene.

Given that this is an ongoing healthcare and socio-political issue of high national and international significance, I urge all healthcare providers in Australia to listen to this interview.

I also urge you to please read the superb array of references that Vera has provided.
